Excellent headphones for music lovers and engineers alike, December 5, 2009

Having never purchased a set of 'nice' headphones I set out to make my first foray into the world of quality headphones. Until this point, I always thought speakers sounded 10x better than headphones based only on my experiences. Little did I know that after I purchased these I would actually stop listening to music on speakers because I can't stand missing all the details! I listen to music most of the work-day and these headphones do the job. They have excellent isolation which was one of my requirements since my co-workers shouldn't be bothered with what I'm jamming out too. On that same note, some may find it difficult to maintain reasonable connection to the outside world with these on because you really can't hear much once the music starts. Other people who want to get your attention may have to tap you on the shoulder if you aren't looking their way. You may also disconnect with the outside world because the audio has you in a trance. I love listening to live recordings from concerts I've been too because I can honestly re-create the scene in my mind with this kind of audio quality.
I listen to Bluegrass, Jazz, Rock, Funk, and the occasional bits of electronica, R&B, and rap. My favorite genre with these is the Bluegrass - measures of music that may have sounded blurred due to the mad string picking going on now sound crystal clear and it makes you appreciate even more how talented these musicians are.

The BAD
After long sessions you may find these have a little to much pressure (3-5 hours sessions) and may cause minor headaches.
You will soon realize which devices you use have inferior sound cards or noisy outputs -- because with these headphones it becomes obvious fast.

I am still burning these headphones in (owned only a few hours), but already I am honestly mad that it took me 23 years to experience music at this level of beauty. I have never written a review on the hundreds of products i've bought over the years.. but I felt obliged to share my experience with these outstanding headphones.

I bought the ATF-M50's to mix with because I read tons of reviews and many were raving about the mixing capabilities of these headphones that surpass most sub $2000 studio monitors. I have them running through a cheap $20 behringer ha400 headphone amp w/ 4 outputs (id recommend and amp for these to get the full effect).

The warmth that you experience from the incredible low end of these headphones is amazing and you really get the full experience intended by the artists, producers, and engineers. NO SOUND IS WASTED, I am hearing detailed instruments/pieces of songs I have never heard before in the years of listening to these songs w/ decent speakers and headphones!

The best part is right now I'm listening to Frank Sinatra like I've never heard him before, but I've tested these babies with pretty much every genre you can think of and it does a brilliant job filling out the music for all types of genres!

I haven't had a chance to mix on them, but have listened to my previous mixes and noticed what needs to be changed- was able to notice right away!

I never want to take these things off!! .. they are comfy too. May just be the best $100 I've spent - I feel bad for anyone who goes through life without this experience!

Great for hearing aid wearers, July 12, 2010

I use these at least twice a week for several hours at a time. I'm hard of hearing and wear a behind-the-ear hearing aid in my right ear. Due to the severity of my hearing loss, it's a larger BTE aid than is common these days, and so I can't use in-the-canal headphones (e.g. iPhone headphones), Walkman-style headphones, or smaller over-the-ear headphones.

Now that I've been doing more advanced stuff in Warcraft and planning to resume Left 4 Dead and Battlefield with friends in the near future, I needed to do something about this problem as one's hobby shouldn't cause physical discomfort, and the discomfort that shouldn't exist in the first place shouldn't cause problems in a cooperative setting where you are helping others and they are helping you.

So when I looked for a new headset to replace the existing Plantronics USB headset I'd been using, one of the criteria was "larger earcups". The smaller earcups I'd been wearing exerted pressure on my hearing aid that caused it to be pushed into my ear and the side of my head. This, combined with the earpieces from my glasses, added up to be pretty uncomfortable and made voice chat unbearable after more than a relatively short time.

I've had Sennheiser headphones before and been quite happy with them, so I knew that the sound quality would be good. Reviews of this headset on Amazon looked great and from the photos it looked like the earcups were indeed larger than my current headset. And the earcups of my Sennheiser headphones were soft enough that I didn't find them uncomfortable to wear over long periods of time.

I've been quite pleased with this headset, although the ability to adjust the earcups back and forth a bit (e.g. tilt forward, vertical, and tilt backward) in addition to the fit of the headband would be welcome; the positioning of the earcups is largely dictated by the fit of my hearing aid, and so the headband isn't always where I would like it to be. It's quite tolerable, though. The headband is wide and well-cushioned and the weight of the headset is easily bearable -- in fact, it's not so light that it feels flimsy or cheap and yet not so heavy as to cause neck or head aches.

Finally, those I play with have no complaints about the microphone quality and report that my voice is clear once the microphone Levels setting is adjusted properly -- at least in the current version of Ventrilo. I have yet to test the microphone with the built-in voice chat system in World of Warcraft, as it is rarely used (a shame, as I like its ability to display on-screen who is talking, but that's not a fault of this headset!).

This headset does not have a push-to-talk button as some do, but a set of leftover USB dictation control pedals left over from a past job combined with a utility that translates a pedal press into a keypress takes care of that easily. Perhaps that, too, could be a feature for a future model, although that might be a bit too "niche" for Sennheiser and not an optimal way to toggle a microphone, anyway.

I would, however, like to see a USB version of this headset, as I've found USB preferable to using the front-panel connectors on my PC. It was easy enough to purchase a USB audio adapter to convert the in/out connectors to a single USB plug, but others may not want to do that or may not be aware that such adapters exist.

Definitely recommended. My "old" USB headset will be finding its way to a guildmate who's younger, and so has smaller ears than I do; she also doesn't wear a hearing aid.

First off I want to say I'm a drummer and love everything about drumming. I have been drumming for over 14 years and I LOVE the way drums sound. I am pretty sure my hearing isn't as good as it used to be, but these phones sound amazing. If you want boomy bass these may not me for you, BUT these headphones do have bass. It's accurate bass, it's tight bass, and if you listen to certain types of music (techno, rap) it WILL boom. But it only booms when intended.

When I hear a song that starts off with drums on these, it is like audio porn. It sounds like a drummer is sitting right in front of me playing. And if I loop it through my subwoofer to play at the same time it feels like a drummer is there too. But i rarely do that, just had to test it once. These were so good I couldn't hear my sub at all, I could feel it though.

If you are looking for an amazing set of headphones with a built in mic these are for you, but be sure to get an amp to push em. They sound really good plugged right into my iphone, but when I amp em I drool. I drool a lot.


As far as the rest of the headset features, my previous experiences with headsets were xbox and xbox 360 headsets. So trying to compare the two is like comparing a Pinto to a Lexus. Like comparing an Emmerson to a Dennon. Or even comparing a homeless guy to Superman. The senns are Superman btw, lol. I only use the mic to talk to my guildmates over vent and Mumbles in wow. They say im super clear, some people even have to turn me down. One person was like "dude I can hear your hangy down thingy." It was a huge improvement over my laptop's built in mic.

Are they worth it?, November 8, 2010

That all depends on how deep your pockets are but after they've had a chance to burn in, at minimum, about twenty plus hours, if attached to a half-way decent portable amp, then yes, as refurbished IEM's, they're worth the price. If you're paying full retail or buying online discount new, then yes, they're pricey but again, if you have the money, what price quality sound?

I bought my pair as refurbished and have the IEM's connected to a FiiO E-7 portable amp and a Sansa Clip+ for a transport. I find the sound quality to be engaging and the sound stage to be wide and well defined. I'm very happy with the purchase when using the IE8's. FWIW, I listen to rock, country and jazz.

Would I buy again? Yes. Would I recommend them to a family member or a friend? Absolutely. Why? Other than price, very important, if attached to a portable amp, I have no complaints.

Best I ever had, February 22, 2010

I purchased these a few months ago and were pretty impressed with their sound out of the box. After burn in these babies really started to shine. Bass tightened up, treble came out, overall improvement in the sound. The only problem was finding a good fit with the tips. For me the double flange medium fit best, but I bought some ebay double flange ear tips for 3 bucks and it helped a lot. The tips are longer so they put the ie8 farther from your ear, increasing soundstage and taming the bass a bit more for a more neutral response.

Durability wise these feel really sturdy and the replaceable cables help a lot since I tend to snag my cables a lot. They're made with Kevlar and have virtually zero cable noise.

Just a few weeks ago I purchased denon d2000s and when I heard them they sounded strangely similar to my ie8s, but with more sibilance. It made me appreciate the ie8s even more and I actually prefer the ie8 sound to the full size d2000. They have a very similar sound signature, but the ie8's have a more smoothed out sound with virtually no sibilance. Maybe I just haven't gotten used to the denons yet, but the ie8's are an amazing piece of technology.

Beware of buying from 3rd party sellers from amazon because the first pair I bought were at a too good to be true price for 240. They look extremely similar to the real ie8s, but the sound quality was terrible; worse than 5 dollar earbuds. I returned the fakes and bought real ones from an authorized online reseller from Canada.

An earlier reviewer commented that these 'slid down his ears' and 'hurt his ears'. I would suspect that he is not tucking the band behind his ears - just like we do with eyeglasses - just like we do with most behind-the-head headsets. However I am sure that there are some people whose head shape doesn't work with _any_ behind-the-head style headphones, including this one, given the variety of humanity.

My head fits most behind-the-head headphones, and I find the Nokia BH-503's very comfortable. I have worn them for as much as 5 hours at a time, and they were still comfortable when I took them off. Battery life is excellent - I don't know how long they last because my usage varies widely - but sometimes I go a week before getting around to recharging them, and I haven't run out of juice on them yet.

However, the big deal with the BH-503 is SOUND QUALITY. These sound really good. I am a sound quality snob, who previously, reluctantly, compromised on sound quality to get wireless convenience. The best sound quality I had previously found was the Motorokr s305, which was light and functional, and sound quality was much better compared to everything else I had tried, but not great.

However, with the BH-503, sound quality is GREAT, no more compromises for wireless convenience. If you liked the Sennheiser PMX-100 headphones, you will be pleased with these. Microphone quality is also excellent.

The headphones work very well with the iPhone 3GS, both for listening to music and making phone calls. With OS 3.1, you can also use voice commands to choose next track/previous track (apple blocks only those buttons from the bluetooth profile) as well as 'Call Robert' or 'Play Pink Floyd'. The action on the buttons is great, and I have frequently used these while sweating profusely for hours, and they just keep on working.

To be fair, they are much larger and heavier than the Motorokr s305. The BH503's larger size adds to the 'Princess Leia' effect all behind-the-head headphones suffer from. I am aware of their weight on my head, whereas the s305 almost seemed to disappear. I see the tradeoff as being between Better sound and lighter weight. For me, I prefer the

First the good:
1. Excellent sound with lots of volume and reasonable - but not great - fidelity.
2. Few dropouts. Far fewer than the Plantronics 855 I bought and returned, but the BH-503 does exhibit some dropouts.
3. Excellent usability on the right-earpiece switches. Nice feel.
4. Rapid charging time and long-lasting playing time.

Now the bad:
1. Why were Nokia's designers thinking? That gravity won't pull down on the headset?! These headphones slide down on your ears. Why? DUH!! Because gravity pulls them down and Nokia provided no way to keep them up except for the friction against your ears. Whatever happened to a good old-fashioned over-the-head retaining hoop? PAY ATTENTION NOKIA!!!
2. These headphones will hurt your ears over time. Sad but true. Wearing them for much over an hour is going to make your ears sore.
3. Nokia is obviously struggling with the "falling off problem," as evidenced by their earlier attempt to put "hooks" on the since-discontinued BH-501. Those over-the-ear hooks reportedly also hurt or caused discomfort to the user's ears. How hard can it be to design a proper headset Nokia?

So, that's it. 3-out-5. Nice try on the sound, but not nearly good enough on the form and fit. Unfortunately, options for Bluetooth Stereo headsets are limited. Nokia's BH-604 headset is too large, but with an over-the-head design will obviously stay in place. I'm keeping the BH-503 for now because I need them, and they are a so-so halfway measure. That said, I sure hope and pray Nokia's designers figure out that headphones are supposed to stay in place without hurting your ears in the process.

I used Bang & Olufsen A8 headphones for a year walking around and running until someone stole them.

Their virtues - excellent sound for small headphones that are not in-ear, look great, and stay on well.

Their drawbacks - cost (although they are the best combo of the 3 virtues on the market), they take noticeable effort to put on each time because of the multiple ways they adjust, and the wires tangle with the hooks if one puts them in one's pocket.

I had no reliability problems despite treating them poorly.

I hope whoever took my B&Os is still enjoying them.

The B&O headphones are extraordinary in many respects. The sound is excellent - not as bass-heavy as Bose are, but a lot cleaner in sound, which is actually more "honest" and true to the actual sound of instruments and voices. If you put them on correctly the low frequency end is very good, and the mid and high ranges are excellent anyways. I listen mainly to classical music, the sound quality for that is overall excellent. On iPods the benefit of these headphones is a significantly higher volume than for example with the standard Apple headphones. Normally it is very difficult to hear classical music with an iPod due to the low volume, but with these headphones this is no issue.

I have read complaints about putting these headphones on - I had no such problems. You have to think for a second which goes on which ear, then lift the piece that goes behind the ears, place the centre-piece above the opening of your ear and then simply push it all back together again. The aluminum is excellent in terms of design and durability. Don't pull on the cables too much, they look a little fragile.

These are, in summary, extraordinary headphones. They are not the kind to be thrown into a backpack or stuffed into a pocket, these should be treated with care and sensitivity. The design is outstanding and the sound quality very clean and open, not artificially enhanced in any specific area of the spectrum.

Editors' rating
The good: The Monster Beats by Dr. Dre headphones offer a stylish and comfortable design as well as exceptionally crisp audio response. Sound quality is mostly balanced, with warm mids and thumping bass. Included are a nice carrying case and a music-phone-compatible cable.

I wish I could give these cans a glowing review but after being burned twice due to poor manufacturing quality I must now warn consumers against making a $300 investment in these.

The first pair I bought was a year ago and I LOVED them from the first note I heard. I had never owned a pair of high end headphones so this was quite an upgrade for me. I was having a blast hearing my music library in a totally different way. This all changed about 2-3 months in as the screws which secure the earphones to the headbands started to get loose. With no way of securing them (you can't screw them back in) they eventually started to fall out. Little by little the headphones began to fall apart until they were no longer usable. I called Monster support up and they agreed to send me a new pair as long as I sent the broken pair to them (at my cost). Awesome! Well not so much...

About 3-4 months later I took off the headphones after using them and noticed the headband had a crack right in the middle of it! Not only were my headphones no longer stylish but they were no longer stable. I tried to work through the problem until one day I went to put them on after having them around my neck only to find that the left ear cushion was missing! More than a handful of times I have had an ear cushion fall off and I'd have to snap them back in but losing them makes the headphones completely useless, both for comfort and sound reasons.

I called Monster back and they told me they could not replace them again for free but I take advantage of their out of warranty program and get a new pair for $150. Gee let me think...I already coughed up $300 on these - should I put another $150 into this product that has already failed me twice? Of course the answer was no. While the cans are nice when they work I just couldn't put more money into something that I knew would break. Additionally, it was a hassle having to replace the batteries every few weeks (or have them run out of juice on you in the middle of the day while outside).

Therefore, I would have to recommend consumers shopping for headphones look elsewhere. In the meantime I will be looking for reliable/well crafted replacement.

I really wanted to love this product. These headphones are sleek, unlike most headphones of this type, and sounded fantastic. Easily the best sound I've experienced coming out of a headphone. However, once I tested them out at home, my mom could hear my entire song as if I was playing it in a surround sound system throughout the house. that was at about 50% volume through my Ipod. Considering these have noise cancelling, you'd think they'd be great to take on an airplane (the primary reason I purchased these) or use on a subway, a library, etc. However, unless you want everyone in these places to listen to the new MGMT cd along with you, these really are more of a problem than a solution. Also, the noise cancelling was almost unnoticeable compared to my dad's Bose on-ears. These really do sound nice, but if you want a more personal, isolated experience I just can't recommend them.

After seeing a glowing review of the new Image S4 headphones on Cnet, I had to dive in and purchase the day of release from Amazon. I have Bose In-ear headphones and these just flat out blow those away. At $75.00 I cannot imagine that anything can compare to this sound quality. The sound is incredibly well balanced and the fit and comfort is perfect.

Positives:
1) Price/Sound Quality Ratio. Great full sound with excellent bass, but not too deep like the Bose. Great mid and high level's excellent for all different types of music.
2) Comfort: They come with a case and several different sizes of in ear plastic. The Bose headphones had plastic that came off all the time and if you lost them, you would have to find replacements. These will not come off unless you want them too. They feel good in your ear and comfortable.
3) Noise Isolation: Indeed these do an excellent job of isolating outside noise based upon the precise fit of the ear pieces.
4) Cord length: The cord is the perfect length for me. Not too long, not too short. The Bose headphones have a cord that is just too long and cumbersome.

Negatives:
1) Not really a true negative, but if you are not looking for a sound isolating headphone, do not purchase these. I walk the dog outside quite a bit and have a hard time hearing things around me like traffic or trail runners, which at times can be dangerous. Just something to think about.

If you are looking at purchasing a replacement for a lost or broken pair of iPod headphones, save your money and purchase these. The difference in sound quality between these and stock headphones is clear and vast. I really liked the Bose in ear headphones when they were first released, but these just flat blow those out of the water for overall balanced sound quality and comfort.

I'm sitting here listening to my SanDisk Sansa Clip+ 4 GB MP3 Player (Red) with these headphones attached as I write this review, so the sound profile of these earbuds is quite fresh. I also believe I have good hearing as a musician of 12 years, so my review will be in a technical, but graspable, format.

To me, there are three main categories to rate any listening device, and across four ranges. The categories are Detail, Presence, and Coverage. The four ranges are Bass, Low Middle, Middle, and High. I think this way of describing can make the idea of audio equipment accessible to lots of people who don't yet understand esoteric and obscure ways of describing audio equipment that some people tend to make up off the top of their heads. Then of course there is build quality, but that is separate.

The four ranges are fairly self explanatory.
"Detail" means how much of your music you can hear, like a light crash of a hi-hat, faint bass guitar notes lost in a sub-par mix, or the sound of a backup singer behind the instruments and lead singer. On good audio equipment, you'll hear things you've never heard before.
"Presence" is how well that range stands out by itself. Ideally all four ranges should be balanced so that each stands out equally, and so that for example the high guitar and cymbal sounds don't drown out the lower bass or vocal notes.
"Coverage" or 'attack' is how smoothly the music comes onto the soundstage, which is a function of how responsive and high-quality the audio drivers in the audio equipment are. If they're low-quality, things will sound very "fast" or "sharp" and end up giving you a headache. Many of the instruments will sound like they came out of nowhere and you'll get listening fatigue very quickly.

These earbuds have some of the best Low Mids and Mids -- where the majority of frequency response in music lies -- that I've heard out of any earbuds in my life. They may even beat out my $250 Etymotic buds that I no longer have. Detail is fantastic: guitar solos are clear and crisp on every note, vocals come out like the person is singing right next to you, and synth work is vibrant and full of life. Presence is perfect, everything across the Low Mid and Mid range is easy to pick up on and distinguish. Coverage is also spot-on in this range. You hear the rise and fall of every note properly just like you were playing the guitar yourself. You can even distinguish what kind of pick and picking technique is used on a lot of songs!

The Highs and Bass are where these earbuds start showing why they're priced the way they are. Both are good, but not excellent like the Low Mids/Mids. The biggest problems with the Highs are the Presence and Coverage. Many of the cymbal crashes come out very loud and overpower the rest of the music for their (fleeting) duration. If there are many crashes in a row, it can make you want to take the earbuds out of your ears. The Detail is also lacking on the Highs. Some higher guitar notes and many cymbal crashes again seem to disappear without warning upon resolution. The Bass is also severely lacking in Presence and Coverage. The Detail is good, notes are distinct, but there is not much Bass response. The Etymotics I had sounded like I had a tiny subwoofer in my head. These sound like I have sub-$100 earbuds in my head. The Bass is cutoff somewhere between 80Hz and 120Hz, and there's no response beneath that. It's disappointing when you're trying to figure out a bassline. It's still pleasant to listen to and isn't harsh like the Highs can be, but the Detail just isn't there.

There are also some build quality niggles. There is a moderate amount of cord noise whenever it's moved, which makes them a poor choice for exercising. These are best suited for car rides, slow walking, trains and planes, etc. The cord also is pretty low quality, and tangles a lot, and also seems like it will eventually break. So far so good though. The earbuds do fit well in your ear, and are generally a pleasure to wear.

However, again, the whole middle range of music is astounding. They are definitely worth keeping just for that. They make it very easy to get over the lacking Bass response, and perhaps just turn down the treble in your mp3 player's equalizer to take care of the harsh Highs. To note, these are trends I noticed over about 10 entire albums, from different artists, so it's not a problem with just one band or kind of music. Luckily, that also means the great mid response will come through with anything you listen to.

I know this is a longer review and I hope I really helped you if you made it this far. These are excellent earbuds for general listening and overall outclass their pricetag by multiple times. Just take the boat load of 5-star reviews with a grain of salt and don't expect monitor-quality earbuds, and you'll be extremely pleased as long as you don't torture-test their build quality.

Lord of The Rings The Motion Picture Trilogy
You could not make a better purchase. I swear it!
For all of you who think owning the theatrical editions of The Lord of the Rings trilogy is good enough, think again. These editions are not like any other director's cuts or special editions of films that we've seen in the past. Usually, when a film has a special edition, we don't get a whole lot more added in, and it's stuff that doesn't really add anything significant to the story.
But with these editions, just the opposite is true. The extended editions of the first two Lord of the Rings films proved to enhance the plot and characters so much more than anyone ever anticipated. Characters and their journeys become so much clearer and more interesting. The story makes so much more sense. And the whole thing has been re-edited with new music for new scenes and extended musical scores for extended scenes! It's absolutely seamless! Everything that's added in really makes me wonder how I could've enjoyed the films in their original theatrical release. These extended editions make THAT MUCH of a difference. And I have no doubt that The Return of the King extended edition will prove just the same, based on previews I've seen and what's been proven with the extended editions of the first two films.
The Fellowship of the Ring has 30 minutes added in. The Two Towers has 42 minutes added in. The Return of the King has 50 minues added in. Can it get any better? Well, of course! With each movie, you get two discs of bonus features! And these are not features that are boring to watch. You really get a first hand look at the journey that many, many talented people took when making this trilogy. Everything from adaption of the books, to special effects, to the music, to the editing process, to stories that happened on set, etc. The bonus features make a whole story in and of themselves!
For some of you, you may be thinking that 3 hours was long enough for these films. I guarantee you that it was not. When you watch these extended editions, you'll seriously re-evaluate your standards for how long these films should be. And besides, it's not like your sitting for 3 1/2 to 4 hours on your butt in the theater with no break. This is DVD. It's a different medium that allows you to pause it, take a break, cook dinner, or do whatever else you want to do and then come back later to finish it. They won't seem as long, especially when you actually see how great the footage is that they added back in. Simply breath taking.
Of course I didn't wait for this box set to come out to own "The Fellowship of the Ring" and "The Two Towers" extended editions. The theatrical versions of those two films alone WERE plenty good to motivate me to buy their corresponding extended edition DVD sets. But I'll probably buy this set anyway and sell the extended editions of the first two that I bought, just so that I can have the trilogy in this nice collectors box.

After Star Wars and the successful big-screen Star Trek adventures, it's perhaps not so surprising that Gene Roddenberry managed to convince purse string-wielding studio heads in the 1980s that a Next Generation would be both possible and profitable. But the political climate had changed considerably since the 1960s, the Cold War had wound down, and we were now living in the Age of Greed. To be successful a second time, Star Trek had to change too.
A writer's guide was composed with which to sell and define where the Trek universe was in the 24th Century. The United Federation of Planets was a more appealing ideology to an America keen to see where the Reagan/Gorbachev faceoff was taking them. Starfleet's meritocratic philosophy had always embraced all races and species. Now Earth's utopian history, featuring the abolishment of poverty, was brandished prominently and proudly. The new Enterprise, NCC 1701-D, was no longer a ship of war but an exploration vessel carrying families. The ethical and ethnical flagship also carried a former enemy (the Klingon Worf, played by Michael Dorn), and its Chief Engineer (Geordi LaForge) was blind and black. From every politically correct viewpoint, Paramount executives thought the future looked just swell!
Roddenberry's feminism now contrasted a pilot episode featuring ship's Counsellor Troi (Marina Sirtis) in a mini-skirt with her ongoing inner strengths and also those of Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden) and the short-lived Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby). The arrival of Whoopi Goldberg in season 2 as mystic barkeep Guinan is a great example of the good the original Trek did for racial groups--Goldberg has stated that she was inspired to become an actress in large part through seeing Nichelle Nichols' Uhura. Her credibility as an actress helped enormously alongside the strong central performances of Patrick Stewart (Captain Picard), Jonathan Frakes (First Officer Will Riker), and Brent Spiner (Data) in defining another wholly believable environment once again populated with well-defined characters. Star Trek, it turned out, did not depend for its success on any single group of actors.

Spanning two decades and countless light years of interstellar adventure, Star Trek: The Motion Pictures Collection is a testament to the enduring goodwill of Gene Roddenberry's optimistic sci-fi concept. "Frasier" provides a weekly dose of the neuroses and tribulations suffered by an insecure and pompous psychiatrist, Dr. Frasier Crane, host of a Seattle radio advice show at KACL. The twice-divorced doctor's peaceful home life of fine cigars and haute cuisine was shattered when his gruff, ex-cop father, Martin, was injured in the line of duty and forced to move in with Frasier. Martin brought with him a semi-psychic, live-in home-care provider, Daphne Moon, his pesky Jack Russell terrier, Eddie, and a duct-taped recliner that clashes with Frasier's more aesthetically pleasing Eames and Wassily chairs. Their home is frequently visited by Frasier's snobbish and competitive brother, Niles, a fellow psychiatrist whose longtime romantic interest in Daphne was finally happily realized at the conclusion of Season 7. At work, his slightly jaded producer and man-hungry single parent Roz Doyle, supports Frasier. Some of the people who voice the callers to Frasier's radio program are often bigtime celebrities.

The entire Alias series comes housed in a replica of the Rambaldi box, an intricately designed gold case with red velvet lining, embossed with "IRINA" on the lid just as it was on the show. Inside, each season's discs are housed in its own storybook case, and a small hardcover companion book features the show's cast and crew answering fans' burning questions, particularly the unanswered storylines such as "Who was Deep Throat?" (the anonymous tipster who kept calling Will in season one, whose identity was never revealed). Hidden in the Rambaldi case's false bottom(!) is a bonus disc of material not found in any previous DVD release.
The featurette "Case Closed" interviews cast members at the close of the show, with footage of their very last set takes (It's touching to see veteran stars Garber and Kevin Weisman, who plays lovable techie geek Marshall, struggle not to cry while season five newbie Nichols weeps openly).
The included fan tributes are amusing to watch; one inventive obsessor hangs a red Japanese lantern above his bed and calls it his own personal "Mueller sphere."
Other featurettes explore interviews with the cast after the pilot was filmed; the significance of the number 47 throughout the series; the numerous networks of villains (The Covenant, K. Director, Prophet 5, etc.) But the best quote from the bonus disc comes from an interview with Rifkin, who assesses Sloane's complex motives with: "He's bad. Sloane is bad. Sloan is baaaaad. Sloane. Is. Bad." If you're a die-hard Alias fan and don't own any of the previous seasons on DVD, this one is for you.
